Newman Catholic College is a new master planned Catholic School and the first Catholic school in Australia to be located within a university precinct, at JCU's Smithfield campus in Cairns. Construction of Stage 1 started in January 2021 with stage 1 due for completion in December of 2021. The building - designed by TTPG Architects in Cairns - is a new four story vertical integrated school with a double storey entry colonnade, open ground floor, cafeteria, general and specialist flexible learning labs, science rooms and general learning areas that are connecting with an upper-level concourse, connecting to a vertical common area with tiered seating spaces and vertical circulation. The school also features a second floor with enclosed sporting/assembly hall showcasing fixed and retractable teared seating. Newman Catholic College will be built in four stages over a 10-year period with completion to year 12 in 2027 for an anticipated 750 students. Stage 1 will be completed in December 2021 ready for its first intake of years 7’s to start school in 2022.
