Bryant delivered Newman Catholic College in Smithfield, for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cairns. Built on the James Cook University campus, this multi million-dollar construction showcases a modern-day masterpiece at its finest.

This purpose-built school for Year 7 to 12 with integration to university, is the only one of its kind in North Queensland. It’s spread over 4 levels combining traditional and contemporary education spaces, with a collaborative open learning environment for all students.

The design features include:

  • 2-storey colonnades with tiered seating, a fully equipped commercial café and plaza areas.
  • An air-conditioned, multipurpose hall with timber sports court flooring, retractable seating, FIBA-compliant basketball equipment and facilities.
  • A laboratory boasting state-of-the-art 3d printer, laser cutter and scanner facilities.

The project was fast tracked and built over an 11-month period with significant time saved using post tension slabs. The concrete pours were scheduled at night, attracting media attention for one of the largest concrete pours in Cairns. Bryant conducted 600 inductions, with up to 120 people working on site daily. The first intake of 120, Year 7 students took place in January 2022, with future stages scheduled over 10 years, taking the total student capacity to 750.
